CREATIONISM EXPERT TO SPEAK DURING PSEUDOSCIENCE LECTURE SERIES

Howard van Till, professor emeritus of physics at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., will discuss scientific creationism during a visit to Old Dominion University on Thursday and Friday, March 16 and 17, for the College of Sciences Distinguished Visitors Lecture Series, "Investigating Modern Pseudoscience."

Van Till will examine "Scientific Creationism: Science, Pseudoscience or Folk-Science?" during a talk for a general audience at 8 p.m. Thursday in Room 104 of the Batten Arts and Letters Building.

He'll also discuss "The Legend of the Shrinking Sun: A Case Study Comparing Professional Science and Scientific Creationism" during a talk aimed at a science- oriented audience at 3 p.m. Friday in Room 200 of the Oceanography and Physics Building.

In 1999, van Till was honored with the Calvin College Faith and Learning Award, presented by the college's alumni association. This award recognizes professors who have demonstrated the college's goal to integrate religious faith and academic learning.

Van Till has contributed significantly to the creation-evolution debate, taking a stand against the creation-science perspective and articulating his concept of the universe's formation.

He has co-authored two books including "Science Held Hostage: What's Wrong with Creation Science and Evolutionism" and "Portraits of Creation: Biblical and Scientific Perspectives on the World's Formation."

More information is available at the series' Web site, http://www.physics.odu.edu/htmlstuf/sue/cal-lec-99.htm, or by calling 683-3468.
