ANN TIMMONS TO PRESENT "OFF THE WALL: THE LIFE AND WORKS OF CHARLOTTE PERKINS GILMAN"

Solo performer Ann Timmons will present "Off the Wall: The Life and Works of Charlotte Perkins Gilman" at 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 20, as part of the Women's History Month celebration at Old Dominion University. It is free and open to the public.

Sponsored by the Department of Women's Studies, the College of Arts and Letters and the Women's Center, the performance will be in the Batten Arts and Letters Building, Room 104.

"Off the Wall," a theatre piece for solo performer, is the story of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, an avowed socialist and author who viewed herself as a humanist crusader. The piece deals with Gilman's struggle for women's rights and social change at the dawn of the 20th century.

Timmons has performed throughout the United States in solo theatre works since 1979. Prior to a successful off-Broadway run of "Off the Wall" in 1992, she toured Lincoln Center and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with "The Pen and the Podium," a compilation of monodramas. In addition to "Off the Wall," Timmons has written a number of plays for solo and duo performance, including "Shaw's Women" and "Beyond Shadowlands." Committed to the concept of theatre as a tool for enlightenment as well as entertainment, she has been lauded by critics for her engaging and spirited performances.
