PRESIDENT ELECT OF ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NAMED YOUNG ENGINEER OF THE YEAR
Robert J. Gies, president elect of the Old Dominion University Alumni Association, was named the 2000 Doug Ensor Award recipient for Young Engineer of the Year by the Peninsula Engineers Council.
Nominated by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Gies was selected for his contribution to the profession, technical accomplishment and community involvement. He will receive the award at a Feb. 26 banquet in Newport News.
Gies, an engineering supervisor at Newport News Shipbuilding, has received the company's highest award, the President's Medal of Excellence, as well as its Community Service Award. He is the author of more than 50 technical papers, manuals and guides.
Gies serves as secretary of ASME's Eastern Virginia Chapter and is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, American Society of Naval Engineers and the Progressive Club.
