'DEAD RUN' AUTHORS ON OLD DOMINION CAMPUS FEB. 28
The authors of the book, "Dead Run: The Untold Story of Dennis Stockton and America's Only Mass Escape from Death Row," will be at the Old Dominion University Bookstore in Webb University Center from 3-5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28.
The authors, Bill Burke, a news editor for The Virginian-Pilot, and former reporter Joe Jackson, will be on hand to discuss the book and autograph copies.
Award-winning author William Styron, the author of "Sophie's Choice" who wrote the introduction to "Dead Run," called the book "...a gripping true narrative, remarkable for the matter in which it treats crime and punishment, and the issue of justice in this country, on a level that should trouble one's deepest conscience."
Stockton was convicted on a murder charge in 1983 and sentenced to death. While in Virginia's Mecklenburg Correctional Center, he and a group of his fellow convicts hatched a plot to escape, though Stockton stayed behind when the "Mecklenburg Six" broke out of the prison in May 1984, hoping to clear his name. Stockton was put to death in 1995.
