SCREENING COMMITTEE INVITES NOMINATIONS OF CANDIDATES FOR PRESIDENT

The Presidential Candidate Screening Committee invites members of the university
community to identify outstanding candidates qualified to serve as Old Dominion's
next president.

The committee has been charged by the Board of Visitors to "recommend, seek out
and review candidates for the presidency" and ultimately recommend to the board
the names of three to five candidates.

The committee plans to complete its assignment by July 2000. A time line has
been designed to ensure a smooth and orderly transition, with the president-elect
scheduled to assume office in 2001.

Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in academic and administrative
leadership (or the equivalent), good interpersonal skills, and excellent management
and speaking ability.

"We are committed to the appointment of an outstanding president at Old
Dominion University and will spare no energy or action in that process," said
committee chair George Dragas Jr.

The candidate should be a profoundly committed, articulate, energetic and strong leader.
S/he must have an appreciation of the role of private support (fund raising) and
possess a tested, extraordinary ability to represent the university to its many publics.

The Presidential Candidate Screening Committee is composed of 10 members,
including six former rectors (Dragas, James F. Babcock, Arthur A. Diamonstein,
James K. Hall, Arnold B. McKinnon and Anne B. Shumadine), one retired faculty
member (Nancy Topping Bazin), two members of the current Board of Visitors (the
Rev. Anthony C. Paige and Lawrie Falck Rollison) and one student (September
Sanderlin).

Nominations should be addressed to: George Dragas Jr., Chair, Presidential
Candidate Screening Committee, 4538 Bonney Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23462.
