NORFOLK MAN PORTRAYED IN 'THE HURRICANE' IS KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR BLACK MALE SUMMIT FRIDAY AT OLD DOMINION

The second annual Black Male Summit, "Black Men Reaching Beyond The Millennium: 2000 Years Strong,"
will be Friday and Saturday, January 28-29, in Webb University Center.

An opening ceremony will be at 6:30 p.m. with keynote speaker John Artis, a Norfolk youth counselor who was
twice jailed along with former middleweight boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, the subject of the motion picture
"The Hurricane." Dinner Friday will be at 5:30 p.m. in the North Cafeteria.

The two men were convicted and eventually exonerated of a triple murder in a Paterson, N.J., bar in 1966.
Artis was released on parole in 1981 after 15 years in jail. Carter, a one-time contender for boxing's world
championship, was released from jail in 1988 after judges threw out the charges against him.

Saturday's speakers include keynote luncheon speaker Dr. Adolph Brown III, president and CEO of the Child
and Family Wellness Centers in Hampton Roads and chairman of the department of psychology at Hampton
University.

The summit seeks to galvanize black males at Old Dominion and other Hampton Roads colleges and
universities and provide a forum in which they can come together in an learning environment to address issues
that affect their academic, social, spiritual, physical and economic development.

The summit is open and free to students, however, registration is required. Call the Hugo A. Owens
African-American Cultural Center at 683-5490 for more information.
