CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS INTERNET PROJECT
A familiar face is in this week's Chronicle of Higher Education. Kurt Maly, chair and professor of computer science at Old Dominion, was quoted and photographed for a story on the university's involvement with Open Archives, an electronic repository of research papers. Open Archives is an alternative to printed journals that allows universities to save money on high-priced journal subscriptions.
Maly and his colleagues have demonstrated the feasibility of Open Archives and its ability to link six existing archives containing 200,000 articles. By using the Internet, articles can be retrieved through one interface that allows a user to search all six archives with a single command.
