U.S. SEN. PAUL SARBANES TO SPEAK TONIGHT AS PART OF HELLENIC STUDIES' LECTURE SERIES

U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes of Maryland will speak at Old Dominion University Thursday, Dec. 2, to open the Hellenic Cultural Studies Program's new Odyssey Lecture Series. His talk will begin at 8 p.m. in the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

Sarbanes, a Democrat, has served in the Senate since 1976. He serves on the Joint Economic Committee, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Senate Committee on Budget and is the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.

Sarbanes also serves as chairman of the Maryland Congressional Delegation. Prior to his election to the Senate, he was a three-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Sarbanes received his A.B. degree from Princeton University in 1954 and from 1954-57 was a Rhodes Scholar at Balliol College, Oxford University, where he received a First Class B.A. Honours degree in the School of Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He received his LL.B degree in 1960 from Harvard Law School. As an attorney, he was an associate with the Baltimore law firm of Piper and Marbury in 1961-62 and an associate with the Baltimore law firm Venable, Baetjer and Howard from 1965 to 1970.
