OLD DOMINION RESEARCHERS MAKE HEADLINES ACROSS THE COUNTRY

From red light runners to how children fare when their Navy mothers deploy, to testing a replica of the Wright brothers' Flyer, Old Dominion University faculty are making headlines in such national publications as USA Today, National Geographic and the San Diego Union-Tribune for their research.

Last week, research which chronicled the frustration of urban drivers by assistant professor of psychology Bryan Porter and the Social Science Research Center made the front page of USA Today. Featured in the newspaper's USA Snapshots "infographic" Thursday, the study showed 44 percent of respondents said their number-one frustration is discourteous drivers, followed by congestion and drivers breaking traffic laws.

The USA Today article was the second in a month featuring Porter's research. Earlier in October, his survey revealing 56 percent of American drivers run red lights because they're in a hurry was featured in USA Today, Newsday, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Associated Press and scores of newspapers across the country.

Research by associate professor of psychology Michelle Kelley examining the reaction of children whose Navy mothers go off to sea was featured in the Washington Times, San Diego Union-Tribune and Augusta, Ga., Chronicle, among other newspapers. Kelley's study showed that children with deployed Navy moms are more likely to experience deep feelings of sadness and anxiety and are more prone to behavioral problems before and during deployments than children whose mothers draw shore duty.

The university's Full-Scale Wind Tunnel at NASA Langley Air Force Base was the subject of recent articles in National Geographic and the Virginian-Pilot. In "From Wild Blue Yonder to Speedway," National Geographic chronicles the wind tunnel's beginnings as the largest in the world in 1931 to Old Dominion's testing of NASCAR race cars.

In the first in a series of articles in the Virginian-Pilot Nov. 2, recent testing at the wind tunnel of propellers from a reproduction of the Wright brothers' 1911 Model B Flyer built by Ken Hyde was featured. Researchers from Old Dominion's aerospace engineering department tested the propellers in an ongoing effort by Hyde to unravel the methods used by Orville and Wilbur Wright.
