HISTORY LECTURE SERIES SPEAKER TO ADDRESS 'PROBLEM OF EQUALITY IN AMERICAN SOCIETY' TODAY

Jacqueline Jones, Brandeis University's Harry S. Truman Professor of American Civilization, will deliver the Old Dominion University President's Lecture in History, "Self-Evident Truths at the Millennium: Historical Perspectives on the Problem of Equality in American Society," at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, in the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building Auditorium.

Jones teaches courses in American social history at Brandeis, where she is chair of the history department. She is the author of five books, including "A History of the Laboring Classes from Colonial Times to the Present" (1999).

She has also written about America's underclasses from the Civil War to the present, black women and work, and Northern teachers and black students in post-Civil War Georgia. She is currently working about a memoir about growing up in a small torn in Delaware in the 1950s.

Jones will sign copies of her books at the University Bookstore in Webb University Center from 5-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17.
