BIOETHICS EXPERT JONATHAN MORENO TO SPEAK ON CAMPUS DEC. 7

Bioethics expert Jonathan Moreno will discuss his recent book, "Undue Risk: Secret State Experiments on Humans," Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Old Dominion University.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Burgess Room of the Batten Arts and Letters Building. It is sponsored by Old Dominion's College of Arts and Letters and College of Health Sciences, along with the Bioethics Network of Southeastern Virginia.

Moreno will also speak at Eastern Virginia Medical School at 6 p.m. in the Hofheimer Hall Auditorium. He will discuss an earlier book, "Deciding Together: Bioethics and Moral Consensus," and give a second lecture on "Undue Risk: Secret State Experiments on Humans."

Moreno, an Emily Davie and Joseph Kornfield Professor of Bioethics and director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Virginia, has held full-time faculty appointments in philosophy departments at several universities, including the University of Texas at Austin and George Washington University. He has served as a senior staff member for two presidential commissions, testified before the U.S. House of Representatives and lectured in Germany, Italy, Sweden, Hungary and Argentina.

In addition to his duties at the University of Virginia, Moreno is a senior research fellow at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University, a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and an adjunct associate of the Hastings Center.

He has published nearly 150 papers and book chapters and is a member of the editorial boards of Bioethics, the Journal of Clinical Ethics, Health and Care Ethics Committee Forum and Accountability in Research.

Moreno received a bachelor's degree in philosophy and psychology from Hofstra University. He was a University Fellow at Washington University in St. Louis, receiving a doctorate in philosophy in 1977, and was later a Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow in cooperation with the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies.
