UNIVERSITY SURVIVES FLOYD

Hurricane Floyd huffed and puffed and sent a steady downpour of rain over the Old Dominion University campus for nearly 24 hours Thursday, but there was little damage to report, accoding to David F. Harnage, vice president for administration and finance.

Harnage said crews from the physical plant, the computer center, housing and food services worked round the clock to ensure the university would be ready to open for business this morning. Only a few minor leaks were reported in buildings.

The boardwalk on the Elizabeth River behind Whitehurst Hall, however, sustained "significant structural damage," according to Ron Tola, director of facilities management. The university is bringing in a structural engineer to evaluate its condition.

"We're not optimistic," Tola said.

All university office and classes were up and running by 8 a.m. this morning.
