UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS BECOMING MORE SELECTIVE

While early indications are that the 1999 fall enrollment is similar to last year's head count (final figures won't be available until sometime in November), it is clear that Old Dominion is seeing a trend in the number of better-qualified applicants and matriculated students.

The news is doubly encouraging in light of the fact that the university has raised its admission standards twice in the last two years.

For this semester, Old Dominion denied admission to 70 percent more applicants than last fall and currently denies admission to approximately one of every three freshman applicants.

As President James V. Koch noted in his State of the University address, "This may not sound highly selective to some; however, it makes Old Dominion more selective than approximately 80 percent of all institutions of higher education."
