OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY TO CLOSE DUE TO HURRICANE; SET TO REOPEN FRIDAY
Due to the threat of heavy rains, high tides and strong winds from Hurricane Floyd, Old Dominion University will cancel classes at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 15. The university, including its higher education centers in Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and Hampton, will officially close at 5 p.m. today. All faculty and staff are asked to leave campus at this time; buildings will be secured beginning at 5 p.m.
The university will remain closed on Thursday, Sept. 16. All classes and events will be canceled on Thursday, including the Board of Visitors meeting, the President's Lecture Series program and the Arts and Letters faculty research series program.
Old Dominion University will reopen at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17.
There are no plans to evacuate students living in on-campus residence halls. University emergency personnel will be on duty tonight and throughout the day tomorrow.
Employees may pick up paychecks today at the Customer Service Center in Rollins Hall beginning at 11 a.m. Proper ID will be needed to pick up checks. Paychecks will be distributed on Friday, Sept. 17, for those who do not pick them up early.
The Payroll Office will accept time slips that are normally turned in on payday on Friday, Sept. 17, as "on time."
The ODU Credit Union will make available, to members, advance withdrawals on their direct deposit and payroll deduction funds for the Sept. 16 pay date.
Supervisors are encouraged to share all of the information above with their employees, particularly those who may not have access to e-mail.
The Office of Computing and Communications Services recommends the following procedures for protection of desktop computers from storm-related damage:
*Move all equipment off floors and away from windows.
*Unplug all machines from the power supply.
*Unplug the data connection from all PCs.
*Unplug all other electrical devices such as heaters and radios.
*OCCS DOES NOT RECOMMEND PLASTIC COVERINGS UNLESS THE MACHINE IS DETERMINED TO BE EXTREMELY VULNERABLE. If the computer is in a location that makes it vulnerable to water damage, it can be covered with a plastic bag or tarp. It is essential that the computer be allowed to cool for a minimum of one hour before the plastic covering is put in place.
