OLD DOMINION GETS HIGH RANKINGS IN SURVEY BY JOURNAL BLACK ISSUES

Only four institutions ranked higher than Old Dominion University in the number of doctoral degrees earned by African Americans in social sciences and history, according to a survey of some 100 schools published last month in the journal Black Issues in Higher Education.

The rankings are based on Black Issues' analysis of Department of Education self-reported data from 1996-97 and from 1998 data reported by the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering Inc.

The university ranked with in conferring bachelor's degrees in health professions and related sciences, and 24th in awarding business management and administrative services bachelor's degrees to Native Americans.

Old Dominion ranked 30th in awarding bachelor's degrees in health professions and related sciences to Asian Americans. The university also ranked 17th in awarding education master's degrees to Native Americans and 27th in conferring these degrees to African Americans.
