MUSIC PROFESSOR WINS PRESTIGIOUS COMPOSERS AWARD

Andrey Kasparov, an assistant professor of music at Old Dominion University, recently was chosen as an American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Award recipient.

Kasparov has taught at Old Dominion since 1997. His music and performances are featured on the Vienna Modern Masters record label.

A native of Azerbaijan, Kasparov studied music at the Moscow State Conservatory, graduating with honors in music composition and piano in 1989 and 1990. He has a doctorate in music composition from Indiana University and has appeared in concerts as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the former Soviet Union, North America, Europe and South Africa.

The awards made by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers reflect the organization's commitment to assist and encourage writers of music. They are granted by an independent panel and are based on the value of each writer's catalog of original compositions as well as recent performances of those works in areas not surveyed by the society.

The panel included representatives from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, the St. Louis Symphony, the University of Michigan and the Lincoln Center.
