Old Dominion University's Helen Crompton, assistant professor of teaching and learning, was named one of 12 recipients of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia's prestigious 2018 Outstanding Faculty Award.
Crompton was also named one of two Rising Stars in recognition of her early-career achievement.
She is the 32nd Old Dominion faculty member to receive the distinction. This marks the fifth consecutive year that an ODU faculty member has won the honor.
Crompton, who came to Old Dominion's Darden College of Education in 2013, researches the use of mobile technology to teach science and mathematics. She has also explored the potential of mobile learning to bring education to residents of rural villages in developing countries who were unable to access it before.
She has received a $2.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation for her research, and she has done work for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the International Telecommunication Union. Crompton also seeks to keep education students current on mobile learning practices.
"I am thrilled and honored to be receiving this award and pleased that it brings recognition to the important work of using technology to provide inclusive learning," said Crompton. "I am fortunate to be part of an institution that nurtures creativity and scholarship. ODU's Darden College of Education has been a place in which I can grow my research and achieve my academic goals."
She has received such honors as Old Dominion University's 2017 Sara and Rufus Tonelson and Instructional Publications Awards, the 2017 International Society for Technology in Education STEM Excellence Award and the President's Award for Volunteer Service in Mobile Learning in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017.
SCHEV has annually honored faculty at Virginia's two- and four-year, private and public institutions of higher learning since 1987.
Recipients exemplify the highest standards of teaching, scholarship and service.
In all, 83 nominations were received this year. They were narrowed to a field of 27 finalists and then to the 12 recipients, including Crompton.
The 2018 Outstanding Faculty Awards ceremony will take place during a luncheon March 1 at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.
