Annual Pumpkin Drop Event to be Held Nov. 3

The Old Dominion University Society of Physics Students will host its annual pumpkin drop at the Batten Arts and Letters building on Thursday, Nov. 3 at noon.

Teams of interested students will test their engineering mettle by constructing devices both simple and complex in attempting to preserve their pumpkins that will be dropped from the top of the nine-story building that is located just off Hampton Boulevard at 43rd Street.

Devices both large and small have been used in previous competitions, with results not always as might be expected. This popular event is fun and exciting for everyone involved, including spectators.

Prizes (or extra credit) will be awarded for the best pumpkin catchers. They will be judged for effectiveness, height and creativity of design. Competition rules may be viewed on the Society of Physics Students Pumpkin Drop website.

This event is open to everyone. Anyone interested in participating and forming a team should contact: SPS President Amethyst Maps (amaps001@odu.edu) and/or Stephen Bueltmann (sbueltma@odu.edu).

Costumes are encouraged. Friends and family are also welcome to come and support their favorite team.
