Lady Monarchs to Play at Sold Out Ted for Fifth Annual Education Day

More than 7,000 students from local elementary schools will pack Old Dominion's Ted Constant Convocation Center Dec. 2 for the fifth annual Education Day basketball.

Students from 33 Norfolk Public Schools will participate in Education Day, an annual highlight on the Lady Monarchs' schedule that was started five years ago by head coach Karen Barefoot. The event begins at 11 a.m.

Last season, the game marked the first-ever sellout at the Ted Constant Center for the Old Dominion women's basketball team. The crowd of 8,472 is the seventh highest attendance ever recorded in the state of Virginia to watch a regular season college women's basketball game. The attendance was also the second largest in history for a Lady Monarchs regular season game.

This year, 200 additional tickets have been distributed, so the crowd of students is expected to be even larger. All students who attend will be given an Old Dominion pompom.

Students have also purchased more than 3,000 discounted food vouchers and will be served lunch by Aramark. Prior to tip-off, Granby Elementary School will perform the National Anthem, while Chesterfield Academy will take the stage at halftime.

The Lady Monarchs (1-6) will look to snap a five-game losing streak when they take on the Loyola Greyhounds (2-4). In the only other meeting between the two teams, the Greyhounds defeated the Lady Monarchs 67-65 in the first round of the 2011 Women's National Invitational Tournament.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, ODU fell to South Dakota State, 71-39, in its final game of the 2015 Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

For this year's Lady Monarchs, forward Jennie Simms is averaging 18.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
