Procurement Managers Share December Employee of the Month Award

Dwayne Young and Neil Cutler, of procurement services, were jointly awarded the December Old Dominion University Employee of the Month award.

Young and Cutler were recognized for going beyond the scope of their regular duties last summer to assist Norfolk State University with ongoing construction projects. At the time, NSU was without an employee who was certified as a Virginia construction contracting officer. Young and Cutler, who hold the certification along with two other ODU employees, volunteered to assist NSU so the construction projects could move forward.

On a daily basis, Young and Cutler, who are both procurement managers, provide exceptional customer service to ODU and the community. With the additional work and services provided to NSU, they went above and beyond traditional roles and provided their services to benefit the community and partnership relations with NSU.

According to their supervisor, Etta Henry: "While ensuring focus and prioritization was placed on ODU projects, Dwayne and Neil were responsive to any NSU requests by providing accurate and timely service. Their professionalism and on-going customer service was essential in the success of this endeavor, particularly since the timing of this collaborative effort was critical for NSU."

NSU's facilities management team was very appreciative for the expert, collaborative, and professional services provided by Young and Cutler.

DETAILS ABOUT THE EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH PROCESS

The University Employee of the Month Selection Committee encourages employees to nominate their outstanding, "go the extra mile" colleagues and employees. This program is designed to acknowledge and reward employees whose accomplishments and/or demeanor exemplify excellence, quality service and commitment to ODU. Classified and AP faculty employees receive a framed certificate from the president, $175 and one day of leave. Hourly winners get $250, since they are not eligible to receive recognition leave.

Note: The selection committee needs specific examples that relate to each applicable criterion in order to select a nominee for the award. Nominations remain active for six months from date of submission and nominators may submit additional documentation to support a nominee during the active six months.

The criteria used to nominate an employee include the following:

  • An outstanding accomplishment that benefited the department/students.
  • Extraordinary service to internal and/or external customers.
  • Inspiring initiative/leadership.
  • Enthusiasm/energy given to assigned work.
  • Teamwork.
  • Exemplary efforts to nurture a climate of care, concern and civility.
  • Creative innovations to service, process or work tools.
