ODU Public Relations Student Society of America chapter to Sponsor Internship Fair

Securing a job in the current economy is no simple feat. Yet, internships can pave the way for a position in public relations.

A Forbes magazine article recently reported that 60 percent of paid internships turn into a job, and over 30 percent of unpaid internships lead to a paying, full-time job offer upon graduation.

"We know that sharing information about internships will be crucial for students hoping to land a job in PR," said Jasmine Khadrane, president of the newly formed Public Relations Student Society of America chapter at ODU. The university received its charter from Public Relations Society of America in August, making ODU's the only active PRSSA chapter in Hampton Roads.

The PRSSA sponsored Internship Fair/Meet-and-Greet will be held on Friday, Oct. 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Webb Student Center's Hampton/Newport News room. Communication/marketing majors are encouraged to attend.

"I can honestly say that finding an internship has proven to be much more difficult than I had originally thought," said Sapporah Hamilton, a junior at ODU. "I recently found out about PRSSA and the opportunities that they will provide through the Internship Fair and other networking events."

The event will have representatives from Eastern Virginia Medical School, the cities of Chesapeake and Norfolk, as well as, three public relations agencies and other nonprofits.

Students who attend the fair should be prepared with a resume and come dressed in professional attire.

The Old Dominion University chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) focuses on providing real world experience to those interested in securing a future in the public relations field. The chapter meets the second Thursday of every month in BAL, room 3056.
