On June 2, 2017, Tim Orr was featured as one of four historians at a symposium commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Midway. The symposium was sponsored by the MacArthur Memorial and the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.
Michael Hucles contributed to the Mapping Lambert Point's project launch at the Lambert's Point Community Center south of campus on 20 September 2016. The project collects past and present stories about the neighborhood and its residents and shares them on a virtual map accessible online (http://www.mappinglambertspoint.org/project.html).

Adjunct instructor Jaclyn Spainhour, also a graduate of both the B.A. and M.A. programs in the Department of History, has published Gilded Age Norfolk, Virginia: Tidewater Wealth, Industry and Propriety (History Press, 2015).
Annette Finley-Croswhite was selected as a University Professor for 2015-19, an award granted by Old Dominion University to recognize excellence in undergraduate instruction. She has also received a Faculty Development Award from the Office of Academic Affairs to participate in the "Auschwitz Jewish Center Fellows Program: A Bridge to History" in Poland in Summer 2015.

Maura Hametz gave the College of Arts and Letters Senior Scholar Lecture on 22 October 2014. Her talk, a reflection on the experience of archival work over many years, was called "Serendipity and Strategy: A Historian in the Archives."

Austin Jersild presented a talk at the Washington History Seminar on October 27, 2014 in Washington, D.C. The seminar is produced collaboratively by the National History Center of the American Historical Association and the Woodrow Wilson Center, with support from the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (http://nationalhistorycenter.org/washington-history-seminar-fall-2014-schedule/). On January 17, 2015, he presented a talk on "Russia and the Near Abroad" to the World Affairs Council series at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach.
Visiting Assistant Professor Joseph Hodes, an associate of the Department of History and the Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding, shared research from his recent book on immigration to Israel in the 1950s (From India to Israel: Identity, Immigration, and the Struggle for Religious Equality[2014]) in a talk on 16 October 2014.
Curtis Evans has edited a collection of some twenty-five essays dedicated to former Department of History faculty member, Doug Greene. The book is called Mysteries Unlocked: Essays in Honor of Douglas G. Greene (Jefferson, North Carolina: McFarland and Company, 2014).
Ingo Heidbrink has been selected as an Associate Member of the International Polar Heritage Committee, an advisory group within the International Council on Monuments and Sites, a NGO dedicated to the conservation of the world's monuments and historic sites. Tim Orr presented "'Fear the Vengeance of an Abused and Offended Army': Did the Union Army Threaten a Coup-D'etat in 1863?" as part of a lecture series at Norfolk Collegiate High School on September 20, 2013. At the Hampton History Museum on October 7, 2013, he discussed "Soldiering in the Civil War: On the March, in Camp, and in Battle." He has shared his research on the Battle of Midway in World War II at the Naval Warfare Development Command at Naval Station Norfolk, the Fort Monroe Historical and Archaeological Society, and the Alumni Center of Old Dominion University. Maura Hametz is the 2014-15 recipient of the Barbieri Grant, the Trinity College Research Grant in Modern Italian History. She will conduct research in archives and libraries in Italy for her work on "Facing the Fascist Tribunal, 1927-1943," and present a lecture at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.

Adjunct faculty member Keith Dickson read from his recently published book, Sustaining Southern Identity: Douglas Southall Freeman and Memory in the Modern South (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 2011), at the University Bookstore on 19 November 2013. The book won the 2012 Richard Slatten Award for Excellence in Biography from the Virginia Historical Society.

Bismarck Myrick recently hosted a group of South African visitors to ODU called Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS (GAPA), who are caregivers for victims of AIDS.
Jelmer Vos spent the 2012-13 academic year at the International Research Center "Work and Human Life Cycle in Global History," at Humboldt University in Berlin. Professor Vos worked on his project on the kingdom of Kongo under early colonial rule (1860-1914), while gathering weekly with a collection of Research Fellows dedicated to labor history in different parts of the world.
Maura Hametz has won the Charles E. Smith Prize from the European Section of the Southern Historical Association in honor of her 2012 book, In the Name of Italy: Nation, Family, and Patriotism in a Fascist Court (Fordham University Press).
