The Early Start MPA (4+1) is a fast-tracked program designed for highly motivated students to continue their education immediately after their bachelor's degree. It is especially beneficial to individuals seeking work or advancement in the government or non-profit sectors.

Since May 2020, Sheanna Gomes has worked at The Pew Charitable Trusts, as a Senior Associate on the state fiscal health project.

I chose the 4 plus 1 program because I was very eager to enter the workforce but knew that I needed an MPA to be a competitive candidate for the employment opportunities I was interested in pursuing. I liked the 4 plus 1 MPA program because it helped strengthen my academic background at an accelerated rate without compromising the quality of education I received.

The 4 plus 1 MPA program helped me by allowing me to get an early start on my career. Now, I have an additional year of valuable work experience that I might have lost out on if it weren't for the program.

I still remember how ecstatic I felt upon learning that ODU offered a 4+1 Master of Public Administration (MPA) program. At the time, I was a junior at the university, working towards a bachelor's degree in political science. I was very eager to transition from a full-time student to a full-time professional in the workforce and knew that an MPA would help jump-start my career. The 4+1 program turned out to be a perfect fit for me because I could earn an advanced degree at an accelerated rate, without compromising the quality of my education. Before graduating from the program, I accepted a job offer in my desired field (state budget policy) and have been working in the profession ever since. Not only is this due to my advanced degree, but also because of the support and encouragement I received from Meg Jones, my professors from the program, and the university throughout the years.
