The trips program is a part of the OAP that works to facilitate an outdoor experience for our participants that allows them to learn about the outdoors while also gaining a better understanding of themselves. At the core of this program are the Trip Leaders, who are paid staff members who have successfully completed the Apprentice Training Program and have a real passion for the outdoors.</p> <p> It is the job of the Apprentice Trip Leader to desire to become a part of our team and be willing to learn the skills necessary to be successful in the role of trip leader.&nbsp; This process includes training in everything ranging from soft skills such as communication and team building to hard skills such as winter backpacking, wilderness survival, and stand-up paddle boarding.&nbsp; Upon completion of the training program, Apprentices become full trip leaders and are paid for their work as a trip leader.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <u>Apprentice Trip Leader Responsibilities:&nbsp; </u></p> <ul> <li> Desire to become an apprentice trip leader/adventure trip leader and develop outdoor and leadership skills.</li> <li> Ability to learn how to lead outdoor adventure trips ranging from half day trips to week long trips.</li> <li> Look out for the well-being of all participants and maintain personal safety.</li> <li> Adhere to Outdoor Adventure Program Trip Philosophy during all programs and educate participants.</li> <li> Assist in leading 2+ trips and/or clinics per semester and facilitate positive group interaction.</li> <li> Promote OAP and represent it in a positive way.</li> <li> Provide excellent customer service; be courteous and eloquent at all the times.</li> <li> Work in close collaboration with OAP Coordinator, Graduate Assistant, and Manager to assist in furthering the mission of the Outdoor Adventure Program and the Department of Recreation and Wellness.</li> <li> Attend staff meetings, seminars and trainings as requested including four training weekend trips which will take place over the course of the year, as well as four classroom sessions.</li> </ul> <p style="margin-left:.25in;"> <u>Apprentice Trip Leader Qualifications:</u></p> <ul> <li> Leadership and outdoor experience are preferred.</li> </ul> <ul> <li> First Aid, and CPR certification or ability to obtain within 1 month of hire.</li> <li> Ability to maintain high academic standards with a minimum of 2.0 GPA for Undergraduates/ 3.0 GPA for Graduates.</li> <li> Ability to communicate effectively, a strong work ethic, ability to act in a mature and responsible manner.</li> <li> Willingness to make a minimum of one year commitment to the OAP upon completion of the Apprentice Program, including weekend trips, evening programming, and potential work over extended breaks.</li> <li> Positive work ethics including a team oriented attitude, willingness to help out, a commitment to providing the highest quality programs possible, and a welcoming personality.</li> </ul> <p> **Note: Not all applicants are guaranteed an interview**</p> <p> To Apply:</p> <p> Go to the ODU Careerlink Website and search for &ldquo;Adventure&nbsp; Trip Leader&rdquo;, all applications must be submitted through Careerlink.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Should you have any questions you can call the Outdoor Adventure Center at 757-683-3389 or contact:</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Dakota Clifford</p> <p> Trip Leader Manager</p> <p> <a href="mailto:dcliffor@odu.edu">dcliffor@odu.edu</a></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Tim Posey</p> <p> Trips &amp; LEAP Graduate Assistant</p> <p> tgposey@odu.edu</p>
