Many of these conflicts are deeply rooted in religious identity. In some cases the conflicts are even being fought between members of the same religion over different understandings of those identities. This course will examine the foundations of religious identity as they are attached to various conflicts throughout the globe. It will look at the Catholic Protestant conflict in Ireland, the Jewish Muslim conflict in Israel and Palestine, the Sunni Shia conflict between Iran and Iraq in the 1980s, the Muslim Hindu conflict between India and Pakistan, the Sikh Hindu conflict in India, The Tibetan Buddhist and Chinese conflict in Tibet as well as the spread of Islamic fundamentalism from its roots in Saudi Arabia to its growing influence in Europe. This course will provide an in-depth exploration of religion and identity allowing students to understand many of the conflicts going on across the globe through a unique lens.

Thursday, October 16, 2014

1230 - 1330

BAL 8009

All Welcome
