9/23 The State of the Girls: Unfinished Business Forum

The State of the Girls: Unfinished Business Forum
A forum to educate the public on key issues and major trends affecting young girls’ education, leadership, and emotional development in the United States today.

Tuesday, September 23, 2014, 7-8:30 pm
Old Dominion University, Portsmouth / Virginia Beach Room, 2006 Webb Center, Norfolk, VA 23529
Light refreshments will be provided

Facts:

Education: although women outnumber men in college and make up a growing share of the labor force, women still earn 77 cents for every man’s dollar earned. A large portion of this is due to women being underrepresented in higher-paying positions, especially in science and engineering and top managerial jobs.

Leadership: Girls cite social barriers to leadership aspirations, such as not wanting to be laughed at, fear of speaking in front of others, and shyness. Girls are also well aware of gender barriers and stereotypes in the workplace.

Why? This work is motivated by the desire to ensure that every girl has the opportunity to become a healthy and productive woman who can be a leader in own life and in the world at large. We home the findings will be used to drive policy and program decisions and that non-profit organizations, government, and industry will connect what we know about how girls are faring to the resources that will best support them and their families.

Theveline Felix – ODU Senior Communications Student, Host
Barbara Hamm-Lee – Journalist/Broadcaster, Facilitator
LaWanza Lett-Brewington – Director of ODU’s Women’s Center, Panelist
Lynn Waltz, MFA – Director of ODU Peninsula Center, Panelist

For more information email: marcyg@gsccc.org or call 757-549-0836
Hosted by Girl Scouts of the colonial coast
