Old Dominion University’s Hispanic Heritage Month Keynote 2014

<h1 align="center"> On Thursday, September 18, 2014, Old Dominion University will welcome Dr. Hector Amaya to render remarks in honor of the annual celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Dr. Hector Amaya is Assistant Professor and Chair of the Department of Media Studies at the University of Virginia.&nbsp; He is affiliated with the Latin American Studies program and the American Studies program.</h1> <p> Born and raised in Mexico, Amaya&rsquo;s research, writing, and teaching engage focus on global media, Latin American film and comparative media studies. Publications include: <em>Screening Cuba: Film Criticism as Political Performance, During the Cold War</em> (Sept. 2010, University of Illinois Press), <em>Citizenship Excess: Latinas/os, Media, and the Ethics of Nation</em><em> (</em>2013, NYU Press).</p> <p> His work has appeared in places like <em>Television &amp; New Media</em>, <em>Studies in Hispanic Cinemas</em>, <em>New Cinemas</em>, <em>Critical Discourse Studies</em>, <em>Latino Studies</em>, and <em>Text &amp; Performance Quarterly</em>.</p> <p> Amaya is currently writing a third book titled <em>Trafficking: Mexico&rsquo;s Violence, Mobilities, and Media Technologies. </em></p> <p> <em>The keynote address will take place in the Hampton/Newport News room of Webb University Center at 6PM. &nbsp;The keynote is part of Old Dominion University&rsquo;s Programs All Weekend. The keynote is free and open to the public.</em></p> <p> <em>On </em>Friday, September 19, 2014, a Brown Bag Lunch and Chat with Dr. Hector Amaya will take place in the Office of Intercultural Relations located at 2114 Webb University Center from 12PM-1PM. Light refreshments will be served.</p> <p> Later in the afternoon, there will be a Hispanic Heritage Month Colloquium: Hispanos/Latinos en Hampton Roads, featuring a panel with Dr. Hector Amaya, Dr. Carlos Campo, Chair of the Alliance for Hispanic Leadership, Olga Torres, president of the Hampton Roads Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Radlyn Mendoza, immigration lawyer at the law firm of Gardner &amp; Mendoza from 3PM-5PM in Batten Arts &amp; Letters, the Burgess Room, 9024.</p> <p> Sponsors: Hispanic &amp; Latino Employee Association, the Humanities Institute, the Office of Intercultural Relations, and Student Engagement &amp; Enrollment Services.</p> <p> For more information, please contact the Office of Intercultural Relations at 757-683-4406 or oir@odu.edu.</p>
