ELC School/Craft Supply Drive - La Puerta Abierta
<p> Dear Colleagues and Friends,</p> <p> </p> <p> <strong>Situated in the highlands of Guatemala, <em>Biblioteca Puerta Abierta</em> (Open Door Library) is a non-profit learning center that offers a free space for children to explore literature and creativity</strong>. Director of <em>Puerta Abierta </em>and former Peace Corps volunteer, Amanda Flayer helped establish the library and learning center in 2007 to instill a love of reading. Since 2007, Flayer has expanded the library to include primary and teen education groups and a mobile library that delivers books to eight schools in the surrounding area. Sadly, “75% of the indigenous population in Guatemala is illiterate,” says Flayer.</p> <p> </p> <p> <strong>ODU English Language Center instructor Kole Matheson and his wife Andrea have partnered with <em>Puerta Abierta</em> for nearly three years</strong>, coordinating book and supply drive efforts through Tidewater Community College and the YMCA, having collected and delivered hundreds of pounds of supplies to the library. </p> <p> </p> <p> <strong>This year, Kole and Andrea hope to expand the drive’s reach to include Old Dominion University for the third annual collection of books and supplies</strong>, so the children of Guatemala might too experience Monarch generosity.
