AIDS Quilts on Display

<p> Twenty blocks of The AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display in the South and North Malls of Webb Center from November 28, 2012 through December 3, 2012 in observation of World AIDS Day.</p> <p> Started in 1987 in San Francisco, the AIDS Memorial Quilt is a memorial for those who have died of AIDS and serves as a visual educator on the devastating impact of the disease.&nbsp; Today, it contains more than 44,000 individual 3x6 memorial panels, most commemorating the life of someone who has died of AIDS, sewn together by friends, family, and loved ones.&nbsp; Many panels feature mementos of the person they represent including baby blankets, hats, champagne glasses, and uniforms.&nbsp; Famous persons memorialized with a panel, include tennis star Arthur Ashe, rapper Easy E, and actor Rock Hudson.&nbsp; Quilt displays and panel purchases have raised over $4,000,000 to provide direct support services for those affected by AIDS.</p> <p> For more information on the Quilt, please visit <a href="http://www.aidsquilt.org/index.htm">http://www.aidsquilt.org/index.htm</a>.</p> <p> The AIDS Memorial Quilt display is sponsored by the Center for Service &amp; Civic Engagement, a component of the Office of Student Activities and Leadership as a part of World AIDS Week at ODU.&nbsp; For more information, please contact us at <a href="mailto:volunteer@odu.edu">volunteer@odu.edu</a> or 683-6948.</p>
