Dept. of History Presents Hidden Histories: Tales from a Watery Grave - Remembering the USS Cumberla
Laura Orr, the director of Education at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, will be speaking about what she learned while researching the museum’s latest exhibit about the Battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862. She discovered that the number of crew members whom historians believed had died aboard USS Cumberland (the first ship sunk during the battle) has been wrong for over 150 years. Many of our students are very interested in applied history, so this is a great opportunity for students to hear from someone working in a museum as a public historian.
