Native American Land Symposium
The Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity, in conjunction with the Office of College Life & Diversity at Norfolk State University, the College of Arts & Letters, and the Department of English, is hosting "This is Tsenacomoco: A Native American Land Acknowledgement Symposium" Thursday, November 10th in the Big Blue Room-Chartway Arena from 11a-3:30p. This event highlights the indigenous cultures of the Powhatan peoples, a once mighty confederacy of native American tribes whose territory covered much of eastern Virginia, including the land on which Old Dominion and Norfolk State Universities stand today.
The puropose of this program is to bring awareness to the rich histories of this land, which are often suppressed or forgotten, to the original inhabitants, and to recognize their enduring relationship with the land. It is also an opportunity for us to strategize on becoming more responsize to the needs of our indigenous communities. At the conclusion of this symposium, we hope to establish a land acknowledgement at ODU, as well as promote and sustain an open dialogue that will further us in operationalizing what it means to be an inclusive campus.
The symposium will consist of two panel sessions: one in the morning 11:00a-12:30p and in the afternoon from 1:30p-3:30p. You can register here: This is Tsenacomoco: A Native American Land Acknowledgement Symposium « Calendar (odu.edu). If you are unable to attend the entire symposium, please select the no lunch option. Registration will close Friday, November 4th.
