Intern at the English Language Center for Credit!

The Old Dominion University English Language Center (ELC) is looking for interns 👀Our internship allows you to earn credit while gaining valuable experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations here on campus and within the community. 

We accept interns for three different cycles throughout the year. The respective deadlines are listed below:

  • Spring 2023 (Jan-May) Deadline: November 30, 2022 at 11:59 pm (🙌 There is still time!)
  • Summer 2023 (May-Aug) Deadline: March 30, 2023 at 11:59 pm
  • Fall 2023 (Aug-Dec) Deadline: June 30, 2022 at 11:59 pm

The ELC has varying numbers of interns we accept in an given cycle based on projects and current programmatic needs, but for Spring 2023, we have the 4 different types of internships listed below: 

  • ✏️ English Language Center Tutor: Interns will provide language and academic support to multilingual students at the ELC as well as any referrals we may receive from campus faculty or the community. Additional tasks will be to create resource guides for our learners based on need (e.g., language guides, technology screencasts for low-proficiency learners)
  • ❤️ Community Building & Events Coordinator: Interns will plan activities/events with the purpose of (1) fostering community among students, (2) engaging multilingual learners with the campus community, and/or (3) raising campus awareness of multilingual and multicultural student strengths and needs
  • 🌱 "English through Service-Learning" Course Assistant: The student will collaborate with the instructor of our “English through Service Learning” course by supporting learners' English development, communicating with community and university partners, and helping the instructor plan/execute a service-learning project that meets both the students’ and community’s needs. Note: This internship will require availability during the scheduled class time (9:00-10:30). The remaining hours will be agreed upon with the course instructor.
  • 🗾 Special Programs Coordinator: This student will assist and guide our arriving Japanese special program students from Kansai Gaidai with their study abroad experience while at ODU.
