Diehn Concert Series and Norfolk Chamber Consort Present "Prince Igor and Poulenc"

Old Dominion University's F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series in cooperation with the Norfolk Chamber Consort, currently on its 51st season, continue more than a decade of highly successful collaborations with a program entitled "Price Igor and Poulenc" featuring vocal and instrumental works by two illustrious 20th-century composers: Francis Poulenc and Igor Stravinsky.

The event is presented at the Chandler Recital Hall at Old Dominion University on Monday, March 16, at 7:30 PM. A pre-concert discussion by Andrey Kasparov commences at 7:15 PM. Light fare is provided after the concert. The guest artist for this performance is the internationally renowned, twice Grammy nominated baritone Rod Gilfry. This program also includes the world premiere of Andrey Kasparov’s arrangement of Poulenc’s Le bal masqué (The masked ball) originally written for baritone and chamber orchestra.  Kasparov’s instrumentation includes baritone, piano duet and percussion.

The first half of the concert opens with Rapsodie nègre, Poulenc’s cantata inspired by African culture.  Gilfry is joined by flautist Hyorim Kim, clarinetist Tim Martin, violinists Paul Kim and Gretchen Loyola, violist Anastasia Migliozzi, cellist Avery Suhay and pianist Lawrence Halsey, conducted by NCC’s Artistic Co-Director Andrey Kasparov.  The program continues with Stravinsky's Deux poèmes de Paul Verlaine.  Accompanying Gilfry for this rendition is pianist Oksana Lutyshyn, NCC's Artistic Co-Director.  Gilfry and Lutsyshyn then perform selections from Poulenc’s  Le travail du peintre (The work of the painter) inspired by some of the most famous 20th century painters, including Picasso, Chagall and Klee. Subsequently, Lutsyshyn performs two movements from Serenade in A by Stravinsky.  The first half concludes with Le bestiaire (ou le Cortège d'Orphée) by Poulenc.  Its title translated into English as The book of beasts (or Orpheus's procession), this work is set to the poetry of Guillaume Apollinaire. Gilfry is accompanied by the above mentioned instrumental ensemble, joined by bassoonist David Savige.

Following the intermission, Gifry and pianist Kasparov return for the performance of two arias by Stravinsky – “Con queste paroline” (With these little words) from Pulcinella and “I burn! I freeze!” from The Rake’s Progress (1951) – followed by selections from the brilliant and witty Chansons gaillardes (Ribald songs) by Poulenc. The Invencia Piano Duo, comprised of Kasparov and  Lutsyshyn, appears next performing Five Easy Pieces by Stravinsky. The concert concludes with the dazzling Le bal masqué by Poulenc.  Percussionist David walker joins Gilfry and the Invencia Piano Duo for this performance.
