DiversABILITY Training

The Offices of Educational Accessibility and Intercultural Relations invite you to our spring 2020   DiversABILITY Training.   DiversABILITY is a very important allyship training program for ODU faculty, staff, and students who want to further social justice for people who experience disability.   People who experience disabilities are all around us at ODU whether we are aware of them or not.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, approximately 11% of college students experience a disability of one form or another while approximately 20% of the general population experiences disability.  In addition, disability is a protected class, which anyone can enter at any point in their lives.  Therefore, it is imperative that we become more aware of the needs of this large and diverse group.  We also need to better understand how we can help to break down the barriers that exist in order to help shape a more inclusive ODU environment.

The spring 2020 DiversABILITY Training for will be held on Thursday, March 19 from 1-5 PM in the Cape Charles Room (Webb Center). Those completing the training will receive a certificate of completion.   Below you will find the learning goals associated with the training:

Participants completing training will be able to:

  • Gain a cursory knowledge of various types of learning, psychological, and physiological disabilities
  • Unpack the general history of the disability movement
  • Explore laws and policies regarding disability support
  • Engage in dialogue about how to create a more inclusive environment at ODU for community members with disabilities
  • Point out systems that limit those with disabilities from being fully included in the ODU community.
  • Listen to the lived experiences of those who live with disabilities within the context of ODU. Construct a personal and organizational action plan.

I hope you will find time in your busy schedules to attend this training.  Please RSVP at the link below:
