Barry Art Museum Internship Program

Barry Art Museum Internship Program: This new educational opportunity is designed to give practical, real life experience and career development in the Museum setting- including but not limited to Curatorial Studies, Exhibition Design, Collections Management, Entrepreneurship and Museum Education. Open to all disciplines campus wide, maximum of three students per session.

Three opportunities annually:

Summer (Mid may- early Aug 13 weeks)

Fall Semester (15 weeks)

Spring Semester (15 weeks)

Structural framework:

3 credits earned for ODU students

150 hours total

Structured group meeting for 2 hours weekly, regular work schedule created with site supervisor.

Semester long personal project: Through collection research interns develop a personal project that helps to facilitate the public encounter artwork and provide context or meaningful supplemental activities to enhance art appreciation. Possible areas of research include: Historical context, personal interest, techniques of making and hands on engagement.

Learning Objectives:

  • Personal professional development: resume, bio, artist statement, online presence review.
  • Public Speaking: lead school and public tours, present personal project to Museum staff.
  • Engagement: learn how to develop and implement Museum programs.
  • Partnerships: identify and foster partnerships across the region and camps with student groups and cultural organizations- develop timeline and written agreement.
  • Budgeting: learn through real life experience how to create a budget for Museum related interpretive materials and events.
  • Art handing: job shadow the art preps, learn how to plan and hang exhibitions, label copy and lighting.
  • Outreach: support with developing and implementing Social Media and marketing research including writing press releases.
