Graduate Students - Transferable Skills Workshop

Graduate students and post-docs:

Are you thinking about pursuing a career in the private sector/industry, government, nonprofits, and others outside of academia?
Employers want to know: “What skills do you bring to this position?”
Do you know how to answer this question? Do you need help identifying the skills you have that employers want?

Come to this workshop on 'Transferable Skills: Learn to Talk about What You Do.'

Thursday, March 5, 2020 from 12.00 – 1.30 pm
Monarch Hall Room 2100

Identifying transferable skills can be one of the most difficult processes in preparing for a job search. PhDs are trained to talk about what they know, not what they do. Employers want to know what you can do for their organization and hire based on a combination of skills, knowledge, and experience. Once you can identify the skills you have that are in demand by employers of interest, you can begin to write professional documents, network, and prepare for interviews.

This recorded webinar by Beyond the Professoriate, you will learn:
o How to conduct a Skills Inventory to identify the skills and abilities you have learned during your graduate education
o How to identify key skills and core competencies employers are looking for
o How to communicate your skills and subject matter expertise in a way that makes sense to employers

Can’t make it to the workshop? Want to access the webinar on your own time? The recorded webinar is available in the Career Pathways events archive (https://sites.wp.odu.edu/careerpathways/2018/05/21/transferableskills/)
