Stay Safe Online - Password Management
Over the past week, a large number of people who use TeamViewer (a non-ODU remote support and online meeting software) reported unauthorized computer and online account access. The reports state that their computers were remotely accessed and their login credentials used to drain bank and PayPal accounts, as well as to make purchases on Amazon and eBay. The company has not confirmed a data breach but has acknowledged increased unauthorized account access in a statement last week. It is still unclear if or how accounts were compromised.
If you have a TeamViewer account, as a precaution we recommend that you change your password for that site as well as anywhere else you have used the same password. If you store passwords in your browser on a computer with TeamViewer installed, we also recommend you reset the passwords for all accounts that were saved.
Regardless whether you use TeamViewer, we recommend using these password practices:
• Don’t use the same password on multiple websites/systems.
• Don’t store passwords in browsers.
• Don’t allow Remote Control Software to be active when not in use.
• Use Two-Factor Authentication whenever available.
• Use strong passwords and change them periodically.
• Use a password vault with encryption to store passwords if they are unmanageable. (Ensure the password vault has a strong password and is protected with two-factor authentication).
