Transit of Mercury - Pretlow Planetarium
On Monday, May 9th the planet Mercury will transit across the face of the Sun. The transit will start a little after sunrise and will last until early-afternoon. In order to see the tiny black disk of Mercury against the bright backdrop of the sun, you’ll need to look through a telescope with a solar filter.
We will have solar-filtered telescopes available starting from about 8:00 am until the end of the transit at 2:42 pm. We’ll be set up in the field in front of the Perry Library on ODU’s campus. Feel free to stop by anytime throughout the day to take a look through one of our telescopes.
Let’s hope the weather forecast is good because, otherwise, our rain date will have to be November 11, 2019!
