Gordon Art Galleries Present Shakespeare and the Americas; and the Art of Derek Webster

The Gordon Art Galleries are presenting two exhibitions in its Self-Taught Gallery as part of ODU's Sakespeare 400 Years After: A Public Event. The first exhibition, Shespeare and the Americas: A Look Back to the World of "The Tempest" explores through paintings and engravings one of Shkespeare's  final plays, for which he may have derived inspiration from a shipwrick off the coast of Bermuda in the New World. In the decades after his death his reputation grew and records show that by the 1700s his plays were being performed in North America and by the 1800s monologues from his works were included in Caribbean masquerades performed by black bands. In The Art of Derek Webster: Selections from the Marilyn Houlberg Collection: The Persistence of Masquerade, Derek Webster, a Black Carib, is further explored for his use of the aesthetics of Carnival in his sculpture and paintings that exemplify the great cultural diversity of the Caribbean Basin.

The exhibitions run from Apri. 16--September.25 in the Self-Taught Gallery
