Faculty Diversity Workshop: Civic Engagement and Awareness 4/5
Faculty Diversity Workshop:
Civic Engagement and Awareness
In preparation for its two-day exploration of the subject at its Faculty Summer Institute on Teaching and Learning in May, CLT continues its series of Faculty Diversity Workshops.
Have you ever consciously avoided controversial issues in the classroom due to difficulty associated with managing heated discussions, debates and dialogues? Although they can be difficult to manage, even for the most experienced instructor, these opportunities can serve as useful and powerful tools to promote learning, critical thinking, and civic engagement. This session will offer strategies and guidance on how to successfully manage controversial “hot topics” in the classroom.
Classroom climate can be characterized as the intellectual, social, emotional and physical environment in which students learn. Often times, climate is created by a constellation of intersecting factors such as classroom demographics, interactions between faculty-student and student-student, the tone set by the instructor, stereotypes, and the range of perspectives represented in the curricular content. This session will assist instructors in being reflective about events taking place in the classroom with the goal of maximizing student engagement and learning.
Stephanie Sanders, Director for Diversity Initiatives, Institutional Equity & Diversity, will lead this workshop.
When: Tuesday, April 5 from 12:30-1:30pm.
