Title:

“THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MULTICULTURAL COUNSELING COMPETENCE AND POVERTY BELIEFS”

Abstract

The relationship between increased levels of poverty and decreased levels of psychological wellbeing and overall wellness is well documented. Although poverty clearly impacts mental health and wellness, little research in counseling has been conducted exploring the poverty attitudes of counselors. This study explores the relationship between professional counselors’ multicultural counseling competence (MCC), poverty beliefs, and select demographic factors. Data were collected using survey-based methods from professional counselors of all specialties. The variables of interest in this study are counselors’ MCC and poverty beliefs. The main hypothesis of this study is that increased multicultural competence should predict positive poverty beliefs. Results of a hierarchical linear regression indicate that increased MCC, while adjusting for select demographic factors, increases counselor structural poverty beliefs. Results of a second hierarchical linear regression indicate that increased MCC, while adjusting for select demographic factors, decreases counselor individualistic poverty beliefs. The second research question in this study explored how select counselor demographic factors impacted individualistic and structural poverty beliefs using a factorial MANOVA. Analyses of these results were insignificant. Implications for counseling theory, education, and supervision, along with future research directions are included.
