Pause before you click!

Phishing emails are designed to trick us, not just by appearing to be legitimate but by taking advantage of our busy schedule.  Pause before you click and ask yourself, do I know that this from a legitimate sender?  Take a moment and mouse-over web links to see if the URL appears to be what you expect.  Do you recogize the web address immediately in front of the first slash?  (Note: these are NOT ODU web sites:  anything.com/odu.edu or odu.edu.anything.com).

At first glance, phishing emails can appear to be from legitimate sources. They may ask for your login ID and password.  Or they may provide a link to a very convincing webpage designed to get your login information or to transmit malware.  They have the same goal though: They want to gain access to your ODU and personal information.

We take the security of ODU information and protection of your privacy very seriously.  In order to protect our information, please…

* Follow the safe email practices found at www.odu.edu/cybersecurity .

* Delete all emails that are clearly phishing attempts.

* Report suspected phishing emails and forward the email to the ITS Help Desk (http://www.odu.edu/ts/helpdesk ).

* Contact the ITS Help Desk if you accidentally click on a suspicious link or think you might have been infected with malware.

* Do NOT follow any instructions requested in a phishing email.

* Remember: ODU will NEVER ask for your password by email or over the phone.

Stay safe online!
