M-Power Peer Educators Wanted

M-Power Peer Educators Wanted:

The ODU Women’s Center has a campus wide program called the M-Power Peer Educator Network.  Our purpose is to educate the student body at ODU as an educational resource on the issues of interpersonal violence to include sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. As members of the Women’s Center’s SAFE team, M-Power peer educators engage their fellow students in programs and discussions that promote gender equality and a safe, supportive learning environment for all students. Through its presence and programs on the ODU campus, the M-Power Peer Educator Network creates spaces for education, awareness, and positive social change.

                                                             

While the work of the M-Power Peer Educator Program is an important mission within the ODU community, it also provides students with the opportunity to hone a number of skills that will serve them well in the professional world.  These skills include public speaking, responding to difficulty participant questions, influencing peers, and advocating and demonstrating compassion for others.

 

 

What is the M-Power Peer Educator Network?

• A resource within the ODU community, educating on issues of interpersonal violence (Consent,

Sexual Assault, Stalking, and Intimate Partner Abuse)

• M-Power Peer Educators provide learning experiences that promote gender equality,

non-violence and positive change

 

What will YOU gain?

• Public speaking practice, skills & experience

• Facilitation skills enabling you to engage others in learning activities, bring different opinions into the open for discussion, and answer difficult questions within a group setting

• Knowledge and experience in advocating on an important issue and for those adversely impacted

• Greater awareness, compassion and sense of responsibility for your peers

• Community service hours

 

Who should apply?

• Any sophomore through graduate level student currently enrolled at ODU, with the courage to

make a difference

• Students with a basic understanding of these topics

• Students who desire to be Agents of Change

 

What is required of an M-Power Peer Educator?

• Complete 17 hours of training (in September).

• Present a minimum of two interactive presentations per semester

• Able to staff information table at Campus events 2 times during the semester

• Attend monthly M-Power Peer Educator meetings to keep current on issues of interpersonal violence
