CLT’s Connect with Colleagues series is designed to offer ODU’s faculty members the chance to learn tools, tips, and techniques that will enhance their pedagogy from others on the ODU campus.

Colleagues from the Colleges of Education and Health Sciences will discuss their experience of interprofessional collaboration. They will also highlight lessons they’ve gleaned from working together to design and execute interprofessional education learning experiences for ODU students.

Kimberly Adams Tufts, Assistant Dean, Health Sciences, sees Interprofessional Education as a platform that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, creates a space that allows for the consideration of different disciplinary perspectives, and sets the stage for advancing a common vision.

Rebecca Poston, Assistant Professor, Nursing, brings the perspective of clinician and educator. Interprofessional education experiences rooted in her own undergraduate study have laid the groundwork for her commitment to the strategic integration of interprofessional experiences across all of the corners of the academic life. Modeling what we teach is an integral component of our approach to interprofessional education, and attention to the thoughtful development of the interprofessional faculty team facilitates success.

Kaprea Hoquee, Assistant Professor, Counseling & Human Services, focuses on collaborating to develop interprofessional experiences for counselors and other healthcare providers. Her experience includes co-developing interprofessional courses, developing collaborations in the community in which students can engage in service learning projects that include interprofessional groups, and using technology to decrease the barriers involved with interprofessional education.

Johanna Hoch, Assistant Professor, Physical Therapy and Athletic Training, considers interprofessional education to be essential to the provision of whole-person, patient-centered care. She believes that the opportunity to work collaboratively with faculty from multiple healthcare backgrounds who share this common goal by educating future healthcare professionals is exhilarating.

Denise Claiborne, Lecturer, Dental Hygiene, offers the “oral health is health” perspective. She notes that, quite often, the oral cavity is removed from the total body evaluation, when in fact, signs of systemic conditions can easily be identified through the oral cavity. Denise believes that providing a platform for students to have interprofessional educational opportunities will facilitate improved patient outcome in the future.

Please come join this discussion about Interprofessional Education – as instructors who are collaborating share the lessons they’ve learned from that collaboration. Bring your colleagues!
