CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Share Your Story:
Faces of Diversity across our Global Campus

On May 17-18, the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT) will celebrate its 18th annual Faculty Summer Institute.  This year, the Institute’s theme is Faces of Diversity across our Global Campus.

In partnership with the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity at Old Dominion University, CLT invites you to join the Faculty of the Institute and share your story -- as a presenter, panelist, or workshop facilitator, or through a poster. We hope that you will join colleagues and community partners as we reflect on ways that we can learn, teach, inspire, and connect – with each other and with our community at large.

The 2016 Faculty Summer Institute on Teaching and Learning is designed to bring scholars together, across the disciplines, to explore diversity in the light of an increasingly complex and pluralistic global society.  Academia is expected to provide an inclusive learning environment where students grow intellectually, culturally, and personally by experiencing the values of diversity and by appreciating the richness of the unfamiliar.

Our ability to foster students’ self-awareness and awareness of individual, social, and cultural human experiences requires a well-considered and comprehensive approach. By exposing students to a variety of experiences, both inside and outside the classroom, we provide them with the intellectual tools to challenge conceptions, as well as misconceptions, stereotypes, and biases.  This practical exposure to diversity, presented through multiple lenses, prepares students to navigate the complexity of a diverse and shifting world, while promoting the values of cross-cultural understanding and an appreciation of difference.

With this aim, the Faculty Summer Institute is organized around several topics:

  • Diversity in the classroom (inclusive teaching)
  • Diversity in campus life (cross-cultural understanding and inclusiveness)
  • Diversity in scholarship and thinking
  • Diversity in the curriculum (body of knowledge)
  • Diversity of culture, both inside and outside the classroom
  • Diversity in research
  • The impact of diversity on student learning outcomes and retention

When you are selecting a topic for your presentation, please consider the following questions:

•                How are you incorporating diversity into your course or discipline?

•                Why did you decide to incorporate issues related to diversity into your course or discipline?

•                What are some of the instructional strategies that you use to engage your students in diversity discussion?

•                What has been the direct or indirect impact of bringing diversity into your courses?

•                How are you assessing the effectiveness of your diversity learning opportunities?

•                What lessons have you learned?  What lessons have your students learned?

As a member of the Faculty of the Institute, you will lead a portion of the discussion as we exchange ideas, tools, instructional innovations, and other resources. As we plan and teach our courses, these discussions will help us celebrate diversity and inclusiveness, as we (and our students) engage in campus and community activities. Here are some ways you can tell your story at the Institute:

Workshop:  Lead or co-lead a workshop on how you have brought diversity-related issues into your courses or discipline. Each workshop proposal should include a description of the workshop, projected outcomes, the target audience, and the amount of time needed for the workshop.

Paper:  Present findings from your recent diversity-related project. Each paper proposal should include a description of the project, projected outcomes, and lessons learned by both students and instructors.

Panel:  Facilitate a panel of faculty, students, and/or partners by sharing your story and engaging the audience in a discussion about diversity. Each panel proposal should include the names of the facilitators, a description of the topic, projected outcomes, lessons learned, and the amount of time needed for the panel discussion.

Poster:  Present a poster to summarize key findings from a recent diversity project. Each poster* should include a description of the diversity-related project, outcomes, methodology, and lessons learned; the poster session will offer opportunities to answer audience questions.  *CLT’s Graphic Design department can assist you with your poster.

Please submit a proposal to share your story at the 2016 Faculty Summer Institute on Teaching and Learning, Faces of Diversity across our Global Campus, on May 17-18, 2016, at Old Dominion University.

Submit your proposal here.
