Service-Learning Faculty Community | Fostering Responsible, Active Citizens | Tuesday 2/23

Service-Learning Community with Emily Eddins
Fostering Responsible, Active Citizens

Combining theory in the classroom with practice in the community, service-learning seems to be ideally situated to make positive, transformational impacts on our students and on our world. However, as we expose students to the structures of inequality that produce the need for community service organizations, a myriad of factors influence our students’ transformative abilities, among them heightened awareness of privilege and sociocultural backgrounds, developmental readiness for encountering complex social issues, and others.

Through community-based experiences, how can we uncover students’ assumptions, stereotypes, and privileges, and emerge with active, responsible citizens who think deeply, critically, and creatively about real community issues? This session takes a look at these issues and at potential student resistance, and offers strategies to empower our capable future active citizens through service-learning curricula.
