2015-2016 Kaufman Award

Landmark Communications Inc. established the Kaufman Award to honor philanthropist Charles L. Kaufman.  Kaufman Hall, Old Dominion's Engineering building was named in his honor. The prize will be awarded to a graduating senior "who has exerted an exceptional and constructive influence on the university, its students or the community by demonstrating the highest qualities of leadership and service."

Up to 10 students will be selected for the Kaufman Award. The recipient of the Kaufman Award will be selected from this group and will receive $10,000. The runner-up will receive a monetary award. The recipients will be announced at the University's Student Awards & Honors Dinner on Thursday, May 5, 2016.

Graduates from August and December 2015 and May 2016 are eligible for consideration. Basic eligibility criteria are (1) graduating senior; (2) minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA; and (3) exceptional record of service to Old Dominion University or the greater Hampton Roads community.

Students meeting the basic eligibility requirements are invited to submit an application packet.  Complete application packets include:

  • A letter of support by any faculty, staff, chaplain, or alumnus of the University
  • Two letters of recommendation. They should be written by individuals who know the merit of your work or who can cite examples of your character, leadership, and/or academic ability. 
  • A completed Kaufman Award application

A screening committee consisting of representatives from the academic colleges and the campus community will review the applications, conduct personal interviews, and forward recommendations to President Broderick for his review and final selection.
