Norfolk Chamber Consort Continues its 48th Season with "Northern Stars"

The Norfolk Chamber Consort, under the co-direction of ODU faculty Andrey Kasparov and Oksana Lutsyshyn, continues its 48th season with "Northern Stars."  Dedicated to the three most illustrious Scandinavian stars – Edvard Grieg, Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius – this program features their chamber works and songs performed in the languages of the originals.  The event will be presented at ODU's Chandler Recital Hall on Monday, November 21, at 7:30 PM, with a pre-concert discussion by Andrey Kasparov commencing at 7:15 PM.

The concert begins with three of the Six Songs, Op. 48, by the Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg.  Set to texts by German poets, these selections will be performed in German by the guest soprano, Emily Stauch. She currently resides in Cleveland, OH, where she teaches at the Cleveland Institute of Music.  She will be accompanied by pianist Andrey Kasparov, NCC's Artistic Co-Director.  The next work on the program is also by Greg: his Norwegian Dances.  Better known in Grieg's orchestral transcription, this work will be performed in the original version for piano duet by the Invencia Piano Duo.  Stauch and Kasparov will then return to close the first half with various selections from Songs Opp. 10 and 21 by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen.  This group of songs will be performed in Danish.

Stauch and Kasparov will join forces again in the second half, performing Grieg's Four Songs Op. 21 set to poetry by the Norwegian poet, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, and sung in the original language. Oksana Lutsyshyn, NCC's Artistic Co-Director will then perform Nielsen's Five Pieces for Piano, Op. 3.  The concert will conclude with several works by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The composer was a Swedish-speaking Finn and his songs Opp. 4 and 37 will be sung in the original Swedish by Stauch, accompanied by Kasparov.  In between these two groups of songs, Ànnika Jenkins, Tidewater's own virtuoso violinist, will join Oksana Lutsyshyn in a rendition of Sibelius's Five Pieces for Violin and piano, Op. 81.

A free reception after the concert will be provided by The Green Onion, a Ghent restaurant.
