Screening of Film Searching for Shaniqua

The Institute for the Humanities is excited to host a screening of the award-winning documentary film, Searching for Shaniqua. The film explores the politics of naming practices in the African American community. It recently won the HBO Best Documentary Award at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival. The film's director, Phill Branch and its producer, Eleanor Earl, will be in attendance and will participate in a Q&A with the audience following the screening. Ms. Earl is an alumni of ODU's Humanities Masters' degree program.

The film screening will take place on Thursday, November 17, 2016 from 7-9pm in MGB 102. Doors will open at 6:30pm. This will be the Hampton Roads permiere for the film. The event is free and open to the public.

The event is co-sponsored by the Institute for the Humanities, the College of Arts & Letters, Student Engagement & Enrollment Services, the Office of Intercultural Relations, the Women's Center, the Department of Women's Studies, the Department of Communications & Theatre Arts, the Graduate Program in International Studies, the ODU Alumni Association, the ODU Black Alumni Chapter, and the Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity.

A flyer with detailed information is attached for your convenience and if you wish to distribute to anyone you think may be interested in attending the event. Thank you.
