ECE Grad Seminar

You are cordially invited to attend the following semester:

Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Problem Solving: Science, Art and Craft

by

Dr. Alexander Godunov

Professor and Undergrad Program Director

Department of Physics

Old Dominion University

 Friday, March 28, 2014

3:00 p.m. KH 224

Host: Dr. González

Problem solving is the action of finding a solution to an unanswered question or a problem. This is a practical skill like swimming, reading, driving. Problem solving is not restricted to physics and mathematics. As Karl Popper said “All life is problem solving”. However, there are no classes in schools or colleges that teach explicitly problem solving. We mostly acquire the skill of problem solving by “trial-and-error” technique. Can we do better?

Bio:

Dr. Godunov’s graduate degrees are in Atomic and Plasma Physics, which he earned at the Moscow State University in Russia. He has worked at Tulane University (New Orleans, LA), Paul Sabatier University (Toulouse, France), TRINITI - Troitsk Institute of Innovative and Thermonuclear Research (Russia), and Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy (Moscow, USSR). He joined ODU’s Department of Physics as a Visiting Assistant Professor in 2002 and is currently an Associate Professor. He has co-written a book entitled Introduction to Computational Physics, and has more than 80 publications. His research interests are:

Atomic collisions

Dynamic electron correlation

Sputtering

Accelerator Physics

Atomic spectroscopy

Computational physics

Atomic data

Honors, Awards and Prizes

Prize of I.V. Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy for best scientific research (1991)

A medal from the President of Russia (Boris N. Yeltsin) for high professional accomplishments (1997)
